On the wisdom of getting advise:
How can you get out of the groove of simply coming to work every day and tackling the chaos just as you did yesterday? Usually it is not enough to go to a one or two-day seminar and get all fired up. That fire tends to die out quickly when you return to work and soon you are back into the old routine of fighting the same battles without making real progress.
What worked for me, and what I describe in my book, is how the hiring of a professional consultant forced me to do the things I needed to do in order to realize real change.
The process first started with a lot of learning about business concepts. Most of us don't know these things intuitively; we have to learn them. Once I got beyond that phase, then the consultant took up the role of "nag." He would assign me projects that I, then, committed to do, and since I'm good at doing what someone else tells me to do, I did them. This works particularly well if you are in a partnership. One partner is rarely any good at telling the other partner what he or she should do, but a consultant can assign jobs with impunity.
The consultant cost me $900 a month for most of five years. Yet the money was well spent in that it changed my business and, as a result, my life. If you think only about how much money it will cost you, you will never take the risk. Instead, if you think about how unlikely you are to change without help, the money becomes less important.
There you have it!
