Another benefit of iATN sponsorship

The iATN is very pleased to announce the addition of the Ford OBD-II System Operation Summaries for 2005 and 2006 to the iATN Technical Resources area of the members-only site. These updates cover gas engines, diesel engines, and hybrid electric vehicles for both years.

2005 OBD-II System Operation Summaries:
Gas, Diesel, and Hybrid.

2006 OBD-II System Operation Summaries:
Gas, Diesel, and Hybrid
.

These summaries follow the previously released Ford OBD-II System Operation Summaries for 1996-2004 (for gas engines), all of which you can find linked from the FORD section at the iATN site.

These new documents are just part of a series of Ford technical documents, available to all iATN members, made possible by the great people at Ford. iATN thanks Ford for allowing this information to be made available to iATN members!

Pushing Electrons: Clamping Down on Computer Current Challenges
by Steve Bodofsky, Gears Magazine, August 2006

One of the great things about understanding how electricity behaves is that sometimes you can gather a lot of information about a circuit or system from a relatively simple test.  A free subscription to GEARS magazine is available to any transmission, rebuild shop or industry supplier. Click to subscribe or call (805) 604-2000.

Sample Waveform Reference Page
Courtesy of Interro/Omitec
Remember Interro? They now are known as Omitec.  The Interro site is still running and includes a page with 32 sample waveforms (mostly good one), with a few notes about each.  A good review for those new to lab scopes.  Click here to review these waveforms.

Fundamentals of Electrical System Diagnosis
By Glen Beanard, Underhood Service, August 2006
This article uses an cars-on-the-roadway analogy to explain the behavior of electricity.  At the end of this article is a somewhat complicated description of how to perform a voltage drop test from our friends at Federal-Mogul Corp.

A free subscription to UNDERHOOD SERVICE magazine is available to owners, managers and technicians in high-volume, independent repair shops where more than half of the jobs involve the service and repair of under-the-hood systems.  Click here to subscribe and then select SUBSCRIBE from the left menu.

AES# tesLOAD by TESlite

Need a voltage drop test when the circuit is not activated?  Do it with the tesLOAD.
Works with most multimeters!

Major update for the Pico Scope

PicoScope 6 BETA, the next generation of PicoScope, software is now available as a BETA version.  It offers many new features and major improvements over its predecessor, such as, improved usability and appearance. It works with all versions of the Pico Automotive Oscilloscope Kit.

  • ‘Custom Probes’ now makes it easier to represent any kind of probe or sensor in the software with a powerful and easy-to-use setup wizard. This allows users to select a probe easily e.g. 600A Automotive current clamp rather than the old abstract method of creating a custom range.
  • The new waveform buffer holds the last several waveforms in memory, so you’ll never miss that elusive problem waveform you were trying to capture. Previously users would have had to stop the scope as soon as they noticed a problem. Now they can stop the scope and shuffle back by up to 32 captures.
  • Measurements now have a variety of usability improvements, including maximizing/minimizing them and enlarging the font size for visibility. Allows measurements to be viewed from a long distance. This replaces meters. Meters were a problem as they interfered with simultaneous waveform capture. Now you can see the waveform at the same time as your large-font measurement.
  • Automatically reduce frame-rate to conserve valuable power when your laptop is running on batteries.
  • Color printing and a new black and white printing mode which uses a legend to make it easy to identify a particular waveform. Printing enhancements make printouts look more professional as well as being easier to work with in black and white.
  • Long timebases are now captured at higher rates sampling rates More detail can be seen in a long capture that was previously restricted to 1ms sampling interval (requires native USB device).

PicoScope 6 BETA version software is available now, free of charge to existing customers. Download it from our website at:

Click here to download the Pico 6 beta software and 75-page manual

NOTE: Not all features from the current version have not yet been implemented in PicoScope 6 BETA version software:

  • Spectrum analyzer
  • XY view
  • Autosetup
  • Overlay mode
  • Persistence modes
  • ETS triggering mode
