It is very important to pay attention to the instrument settings, especially if you are using them as a base for further adjustment. This includes but is not limited to:

 

Probe Calibration

For example, if the scope is set to 10:1 and you are using 1:1 probes the measurements will be off.

 

Trigger Source

For example, if the trigger source is channel B then connecting just channel A could result in unreliable signal display.

 

Trigger Mode

For example, if Free Run is on the screen  will always update regardless of the input or trigger signal. If it is set to Trigger on Edge - On Trigger then it will only update on a good trigger signal.

 

Division Settings

For example, the vertical setting can be voltage or amps.
